Some products are never made on spec. They are configured, customised or simply too expensive to sit on a shelf, so nothing starts until a customer has committed.
Mark the item as Make to Order and Dream MRP creates one work order per sales order line, for exactly the quantity ordered. Stock on hand is deliberately ignored — every order gets its own dedicated build, so two customers are never quietly served from one job. Forecast lines do not create Make to Order work orders, which keeps speculative demand out of the workshop entirely.
The components underneath are a different question. Those are exploded through the bill of materials and planned normally, so long-lead parts or subassemblies can still be held as stock while the finished item is built strictly to order.
Each sales order line produces its own work order at the exact quantity. Nothing is merged, nothing is rounded, and the job traces straight back to the customer who asked for it.
Minimum stock levels apply to Purchased and Make to Stock items only. A Make to Order item is never replenished speculatively, so the floor cannot quietly start a build nobody ordered.
The bill of materials is exploded through every level, so raw material and sub-assemblies are planned against the confirmed order while the finished item itself is never made ahead.
Closing the work order refreshes cost from what was actually consumed and posts the stock movements — components out, finished item in — so margin on the job reflects the build, not the estimate.
Best for: Job shops, engineered-to-order and configured products, and anyone whose finished goods are too varied or too expensive to hold in stock.
